As I'm officially and publicly starting Making Space Studio, I got to thinking about the many times I've started, and then gradually, quickly, stopped previous attempts at starting a studio business.
I'm an introvert.
I'm an observer.
Now, I know there are thousands upon thousands of businesses run by introverts. For me, it was always a mix of reasons including my introverted self. Looking back now, I lacked focus, dedication, and drive. And these were all related to the jobs that I had or didn't have. My living and partner situations. My energy that I could devote to it.
And then there were the things that I was unsure about... many that I'm still unsure about!
Registering a business.
Taxes.
Finding an accountant that understands small art businesses.
Shipping goods.
Having a dedicated bank account with no money in it.
In my video that goes live tomorrow, I talk about all of these and more! And you can watch me put together pieces for the studio at the same time :)
In my mind, starting a business is daunting. There are so many things that I don't know about it, and that is hard for me. I do things that I know about, and I'm very good at the things that I do. It makes me uncomfortable to dive into an arena where I could fail. Publically fail.
But you know what? I don't think anybody else really cares.
Some advice that I keep reading and hearing online about starting a business (or project, or whatever else) is to just start. A business can't be a business if it doesn't exist at all.
To prepare for Making Space Studio to launch in 2023, here are the things I've done in the past month to prepare:
Move studio spaces: my old one didn't make me want to come to the studio every day.
Buy studio furniture: Shelving and a rolling work table were keys to getting me organized
Get shipping supplies: Ease into selling pieces by having part of the shipping puzzle figured out.
Plan a month of social media: I planned out my article and video schedule for January.
Get an amazing planner: I'll likely do a deeper dive into this planner soon — it's that good!
There are definitely still so many unknowns, but these things have helped me feel more dedicated and prepared as I enter 2023.
